Allowing two users on the same computer

I am new to Mac and I purchased Office for Mac when I bought the computer. My wife and I both have profiles. I set up Office before she set up her account. When she opened her account the Office Icons where not available to her so I reinstalled Office under her account. In doing so my account does not allow me to use Entourage. How do I set up the computer so that both of us can use office when logged into the computer?

Hi,

Hum :-\
Office should be installed in /Applications and therefore be available
to all users on the Mac.
If you are talking about icons in the Dock, all you have to do is to
open /Applciations/Microsoft Office 2008, then select the applications
you want to add and simply drag them to the Dock in her user account,

In doing
so my account does not allow me to use Entourage. How do I set up the
computer so that both of us can use office when logged into the
computer?

Where did you install Office?? You might have more than one install and
having nasty comflicts somewhere.

Hi Corentin,

I tried what you told me in your first paragraph and it didn't work. Then I went to Applications-->Microsoft 2008-->Database Utility and tried rebuilding the database. That also was unsuccessful.

I used the default settings to install office. Maybe the problem is having installed it twice. I'm lost on what to. I appreciate your attempt to help.

Do you currently have a copy of Office in your Applications folder? Can you
launch it under your account? If not, what exactly happens when you try?

There's really no such thing as 'installing it twice,' as applications are
stored in a common location. Although there could theoretically be a
permissions issue with some of the libraries.

Adam, do you think this is a case where Repair Permissions in Disk Utility
would help? That's what I'd try.

Possibly (and to my knowledge it never hurts), but I'd like to see what the
issue is first.

These installers sometimes allow custom installs (I don't remember for
sure for Office 2008). You can also install the application and move it
later. You can effectively have Office isntalled multiple times on your
Mac.

Thank you gentlemen for your assistance.
Office 08 is in my Applications folder. Word and Excel open when I click the icons on the desktop. When I try to use Entourage the error message says that it will not run under my this user profile. It works with my wife's profile though. I will attempt to find Repair Permissions in Disk Utility when I get home and see what happens.

There is something that remains unclear to me....
Are you both using Entourage under the same user account (with two
different identities) or do you each have a user account and are using
Entoruage from there?

In either situations, Office is indeed where it should be. No matter
what, unless you have a nasty Permissions issue (which shoudl be
repaired by Disk Utility), you should be able to launch all applciations
from either user account.

There is also the possibility that your Entourage Identity database is
corrupted. If you have nothing you really need in there (eg: you have an
Exchange account and everything will be redownloaded anyway), then you
can create a new identity and start from scratch. Otherwise, you should
launch Entourage pressing the Alt key down to launch the Database
Utility. Ask it to rebuild/repair your database to see if it corrects
the issue.

Ok Gentlemen this is what I have tried tonight. Based on what Adam and ED said I went to disk utility and repaired permissions. This it the message I received: Permissions differ on "library", should be drwxrwxxr-t, they are drwxrwxr-x. Permissions repair complete.

I went to the dock and clicked on Entourage receiving the message, "This identity cannot be opened with this version of Entourage.

I just read Corentin's email and used the alt button while clicking on Entourage on the dock launching the Database Utility. I clicked on the rebuild/repair and it said it rebuilt successfully. When I tried to launch Entourage from the dock I received the same identity cannot be opened message as before.

Unless this is a challenge to all of you that you feel the need to win I don't plan on continuing to try using Entourage. I have email that works (the postage stamp) so I will be fine with that.

Thank you for your work and assistance.

Diane, I have Office: MAC 2008 which as far as I know is the latest version.

Yes, but have you applied the latest update? Under "About Entourage" you
should see 12.1.0.

As I explained on the link
<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/faq_topic/performance2.html>,

This message usually means, for example, that Entourage is at 12.0.0, but
the saved database was saved in a more updated version (12.1.0). Since there
was a database format change in there, Entourage 12.0.0 cannot open a
database saved in 12.1.0.
