alphabet index in Contacts

How to I turn off alternate language alphabet from
showing up on the right hand side of my contacts view

These instructions are for Outlook 2003 -- you didn't mention your version
so your instructions may differ:

Tools | Options | Preferences tab, Contact Options button; clear the
checkbox for "Show an additional Contacts Index".

I don't have a copy of Outlook 2002 handy to test with but I'm almost
certain the command is the same for that version.
