Alphabetical order!

I am using Word 2004 for Mac and would like confirmation if I can do the
following.

I have compiled a large list in a Word doc of tutorials that I use and the
corresponding hyperlinks. is there any way that I can arrange this list
automatically to show it alphabetically.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Assuming that each item in the list is a separate paragraph, select the list
then go to Table> Sort [yes, I know it isn't a table, but that's where MS
chose to stick the Sort command :)].

Thank you Bob for your input. I did as you suggested but unfortunately it
did not come out as I wanted. My list consists of the tutorial name and
directly underneath is the hyperlink. I have then left a space which is the
same as a paragraph uses.

When I select Table>Sort I get a list in alphabetical order but the
paragraphs are not kept. All the hyperlinks are grouped together. Each line
is sorted separately rather than each paragraph.

Have you any further suggestions please.

OK - the problem is that your list items aren't 1 para per item, they're 3
paras per item which makes the matter more complex. As I understand it you
list looks like this with non-printing characters (¶) displayed:

Tutorial name¶
Hyperlink¶

Tutorial name¶
Hyperlink¶

Etc.

If I'm right, save a copy of the file [to be safe] & try this in the copy:

Select the list then go to Table> Convert> Convert Text to Table...

Enter the number of columns as 3 (the number of rows should automatically
equal the number of list items), confirm Separate text at Paragraphs, OK...

Use Table> Sort based on column 1, OK...

Leave the table selected & go to Table> Convert> Convert Table to Text,
select Paragraph Marks, OK

Dear [whoever],

If each entry consists of only two paragraphs (tutorial title + hyperlink),
select all the text and choose Table menu => Convert => Convert text to
table, then make a 2-column table. Then sort. Then convert the table to text
if appropriate.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "I have then left a space which is the
same as a paragraph uses" but if it means you have used blank paragraph
marks (key Command-8 to see them) to have space between the entries, get rid
of them in one hit via Find and Replace, and instead apply space
before/after (i.e., above/below) the textual paragraph marks.

Cheers,

Just a follow-up, having noticed Clive's reply which is basically the same
as mine. The difference is that his method would have you remove the empty
paras first - which really should be done - whereas my method retains them.
Empty paras for spacing in a Word doc actually should be avoided as they do
nothing but complicate things.
