Alphabetizing address book in Outlook 2003

I am having a similar problem as others on this board with alphabetizing my
Outlook 2003 address book by last name. Everything was working fine for a
number of years. The other day, I had a problem with continuous messages
asking to enter my POP3 password. I struggled with correcting a corrupted
..pst folder, but finally got my email working again (i.e., no more messages
to enter password). However, somehow my address book was not picking up the
names in my Outlook 2003 Contacts list (all entered alphabetically by LAST
name). Again, I struggled, but finally got the address book to recognize my
Contacts list. Unfortunately, the address book only displays the Contact
names alphabetically by FIRST name. And, yes, I have tried multiple times to
to change the sort order under "Tools", but to no effect.

Any suggestions?

Just the one posted here every day. Go to Tools > E-mail accounts > View or
change existing directories or address books > Outlook Address Book >
Change… > Set your sort order there
Note that your options are only to sort by "First, Last" or by "File As." So
if you want your Outlook Address Book to sort by "Last, First" you must have
your Contacts' File As fields configured that way.

Thanks. As I noted, I DID apply the sort function as described; furthermore,
my Contacts are in lastname/firstname order.

However, I just did an experiment in which I entered a bogus name to my
active Contacts list. This name DID NOT subsequently show up in the address
book. Therefore, I am not sure WHAT the address book is recognizing. There
are a number of apparently empty address books and at least one empty
Contacts list ("Contacts in Personal Folder"). I have selected the active
list ("contacts > properties > show this folder as an email address book").
But, no luck. My problem may be more complex than just alphabetizing.

Obviously. Clearly you corrupted your Outlook Address Book Service. No way
to know how from your description. It is not unusual for the Outlook Address
Book to “lose track†of the connection to its Contacts Folder when you move
or import your PST or update your Outlook version or operating system. Use
the following steps to reset the connection. Note that in some instances you
may actually have to remove the Outlook Address Book completely from your
Profile, close Outlook, and then re-add it before you can get it to work.

Make sure the Contact folder is enabled as an email address book. Right
click the Contacts folder, choose Properties then Outlook Address Book. Is
the box to enable as email address book checked?
If this is grayed out...Go to Tools | Email Accounts, choose View or change
existing directories or address book. Is the Outlook Address Book present?
If it isn't listed, add it and close and restart Outlook. If it is listed,
then remove it and close then restart Outlook and repeat these steps to add
it.
