Already open error message

Here's the message I get when opening certain Word and
Excel files. A document with the name "blahblah.xls" is
already open. You cannot open two documents with the same
name, even if the documents are in different folders. To
open the second document wither close the document thats
current;y open or rename one the documents.

I'm only opening up one copy of these files. I can work
with the file after clicking okay to that message, but
its an annoyance.
