Altenate email viewing problem

Please could anyone offer any advice on the Outlook problems listed below.
Alternate email viewing

Very intermittently Outlook will suddenly start behaving strangely for
clients on Outlook 2003 (not cached mode), and Outlook 2002. The exchange
server is 2003 (version 6.5.7226.0), running on Windows server 2003 Standard
edition version 5.2. Windows Client versions are XP Pro SP1 \ 2 and the
problem can occur on either. When you scroll down the list of emails in your
inbox you get unable to display in the preview or reading pane. During this
time if you try to create a new email and send it you get the message "The
Operation Failed"

In all cases the client has to close Outlook and reopen in order to clear
the problem.

Work undertaken

The following has been tried with no success, and the error can occur at any
time of the day although in one instance this mainly happens after 5pm
strangely enough when the network is usually quieter:

Complete uninstall and fresh install of Outlook 2003, 2002, removing Outlook
profile also.
Upgrade over the top of Outlook 2002.
Removal of offline files (.ost files)
Turning off of power saving on NIC
Upgrading Windows XP client machines to SP2 including all other hotfixes \
security patches.
Installing Office Service Pack 3 for Outlook 2002 clients and installing the
latest updates for Outlook 2003 clients.
Tried a detect and repair within the Outlook program
Disabling of AV software



Outlook cached mode issue

I then tried as a test to upgrade two clients to Outlook 2003 cached mode.
This has stopped the alternative email viewing problem, but has caused
another problem. The following message occurs each time the mailbox is
opened.

“The data file ‘Mailbox – user name’ was not closed properly.
