Alternate Access Mapping without reverse proxy

I have been working this issue for almost a week now and have no resolution.

Currently I have a Project Server 2007 installed using WSS. I need to make
my server live via web access but can not seem to get the alternate access
mapping to work. I am trying to set everything up on port 80 because I know
that is open via the firewall. We only have 4 ports open 80, 443, 8080. and
8443. (8080 and 8443 are being used by another application and not
available). Right now I have my server setup to work locally with a default
zone of http://hostname/pwa. I want to set the project web access to be
accessible via the internet as an example http://h-name.com/pwa. We have
registered http://h-name.com as a public URL so it should be working. I have
tried so many things I can't even tell you. I have tried setting up an
internal URL of http://h-name.com associated to the default zone
http://hostname . Once I do that I also have gone into IIS and set the
hostheader of the sharepoint:80 website to h-name.com on the advance tab.
Still no luck. I have tried extending the web app using the internal URL of
http://hostname.perimeter.h-name.com and then associating http://h-name.com
to that, but still no luck. I would like to make my configuration work
without adding another layer such as ISA. We are configuring this all on one
server due to resource limitation and I can't see putting ISA on it too. Any
help would be GREATLY appreciated.
