Alternatives to FrontPage Photo Galleries page updated.

It is common knowledge that the Photo Gallery component that is built into
FP 2002 just doesn't work very well! There are no changes for this problem
for FP 2003 even though there are so many questions asked about it in the
FrontPage forum. My first tutorial about this subject was this page. Now
let's look at some other possibilities.

Galleries made with JAlbum, Arles Image Web Page Creator, Photoshop and
Photoshop Elements, PhotoImpact, Photo Explorer and ThumbsPlus.
Explanations and links to examples and programs.

I think only CD and exe ones though..not for the web - unless there's a new feature for it.

Steve Easton

Actually, if you have a Casio digital camera it will also create a photo gallery, right on it's
little disk as you take the pictures.
You'll need to edit the html pages for colors and such, but it creates one.

But the photos will all have to be optimized won't they? Can't image not
cropping etc. That's why I'm dead set against printing photos directly from
a camera. ..... plus I bracket everything for exposure.

Yes they'll have to be optimized. I was just making a point that it's there on the disk.

Ok, just for you I created a gallery using IrfanView and published it just as it was created.
I did have to edit the links to the images but I left everything else as is.
I didn't say it was pretty but here it is:

Place some images in a folder.
Open IrfanView and browse to the folder and select an image.
Click File > Thumbnails.
In the panel that opens Click File > and then click "Save selected thumbs as html file." In the
next panel check the appropriate boxes to perform the functions you want.

In IrfanView help, look for HTML Export.

Thank you!!! ... love the puppies. But there are slightly more elogent ways
to present images. That's pretty basic stuff.
I hope you've tried out some of my suggestions ... especially JAlbum.

Eleanor, I didn't day it was pretty.
Nor did I edit any html in any of the pages produced, I just published what IrfanView spit out.

All things considered, for anyone with a little knowledge of html you sure can't beat the price.

;-)

But then also, I've "never" had problems with the FrontPage photo gallery.
The majority of FP photo gallery problems stem from the fast that folks don't place the images in a
separate folder inside the web before they create the gallery.

Steve, Eleanor et al

I like the gallery that IrfanView created. I recently downloaded it and
JAlbum - as you say, you can't beat the price.

I am keen on photography, now that I am retired and have acquired a digital
camera - not ultra-high resolution but a great 10X zoom lens (Kodak 7430, if
anyone's interested) and one of my future projects will be putting up some
albums on my website. So I want to find the best way to do this.

I have used FP photogallery, but after reading some of Eleanor's postings on
this newsgroup and on her websites, I found it easier to create a folder of
thumbnails and a corresponding folder of images, then display the first with
links to the second. So a way of easily creating the thumbnails folder would
be useful. It is good to know what size to make the thumbnails, too - is
about 20 to 50Kb seems O.K.?

I shall watch this thread with interest

The thumbnails that IrfanView created are 3 to 4 kb in size.
The actual images are 24 to 50 kb.

The advantage with IrfanView ( imho ) is that you can point it at a folder full of images, open one
of the images, click resize / resample ( use resample it makes better images ) set the size and
compression you want and then do a "batch" resize resample.
Tell it where to save the resized images ( use a different folder ) and in about the time it takes
to read this it's done.

You can easily get a huge 1mb .bmp camera image down to a 600 by 800 .jpg that only has a file size
of 50 to 60 kb without loosing any image quality.

You can also embed comments, copyright info, edit / remove EXIF information etc "inside" your
images as part of the batch process.

Then point it at the new folder, do the thumbnail thing and then save as html.

I'm sure there's a way to "pre-define" the look of the finished pages, I just haven't dug into it
yet.

obtw, you can also play audio and video files in IrfanView. ( and much more )

Eleanor, I love the Alternatives page and your tutorials and advice
here in the group have helped me many times. So I thought I would
suggest one alternative I have been using. It's called "PhotoThumb"
and can be found here. http://photothumb.com/pt/index.shtml

It's not free but for me is a real time saver with all the photo work
I do during the season. Here is an example on my site.
http://www.kansasviking.com/imagesjacksonville/jacksonville.html

I use the Black Theme, but there are several others to choose from. I
tried several alternatives and settled on this one for my needs.
Thought I would suggest it and thanks again for all tutorials on your
site.
