Always create backup copy

Hi,

Yesterday in Preferences I checked "Always create backup copy".

Today, the electricity went out, and when I got word back, there was no
backup copy of the document I was working on. I went to preferences and
found that "Always create backup copy" was not checked. It had reverted
back to fast save.

I then checked "Always create backup copy" and a backup copy appeared in the
document folder, and also a backup backup copy. Was this just a copy of the
same document I now have open? The copy was no different. It hadn't saved
any of the text done, but not saved, at the time of the crash.

Does a back up copy retain text that has been typed, but not yet saved?

Thanks, Rafael

I believe, that a backup copy retains a copy of the last save of the doc.
So when you hit Save, the backup copy made is what the doc was the last time
you hit Save. No backup copies are created until you hit Save at least
twice.

AutoRecover *might* retain text that has been typed, but not Saved, as long
as an AutoRecover file was created, which only happens at certain intervals.
If you type, then an AutoRecover comes along *before* you hit cmd-s, AR will
help. But if you type, then an AR is made, then type, then hit cmd-s, then
type, then Word crashes, Word might offer you an AutoRecover file that is
actually older than your document.

I find that training my fingers to hit cmd-s whenever they are not typing
words is most useful, and in fact I don't bother with "always create backup
copies" and have rarely needed AutoRecover. (This gets annoying when I am
filling out a form on the web and keeping hitting cmd-s automatically, but
protects my Word documents.) I think the most I have ever lost is a
paragraph or so.

Does "fast saves" have a tendency to check itself in your prefs? Worth doing
something about, if so.

By the way, I hope you shut down your computer at least 1x/day, with OS 9?
I found that greatly minimized my crashes.
