Always reverts back to docx

In Word 2007, I set the save default to Word 97-2003 (doc.). However,
everytime the computer is restarted, it reverts back to a save default to
Word Documnet (docx.). I have Windows XP. Any way to correct this problem?
Please help - If I forget to change it and send it off, others cannot open.
It has become quite the annoyance. Thank you

By going to Microsoft Office Button / Word Options / Save / Save files in
this format drop-down list.

Start regedit, navigate to the
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Options registry
key. Change the DefaultFormat data value to Doc.
