ambiguous outer joins

My database for was not recording in the right place,
realised it was not bound to the right sourse so fixed it,
not it won't run because my SQRL has ambiguoise outer
jons, it needs to know which to perform first. I don't
know which joins it is talking about and also how to
create a new quiery that will tell it or how to include
that in te SQRL in the quiery that the form runns off.

From the long list of what appears to be "repeating fields" in your SQL
statement, I wonder if your data structure isn't causing you (and Access)
some issues. Queries are only as effective as the underlying data structure
they rely on.

Perhaps you could provide a bit more description of your data structure...

The database is to collect complex data on observations of
school children. Each catagory is observed for 10min the
way that the raw data is provided for data entry is in
sheets of 5 min each, so we obsereve for exapmle teacher
led, how well they pay attention for 5 min and then move
onto another sheet I have to keep the entry system under
the same rules as the paper versions. each behaviour is
either present or not, we then observe attention for when
they are working individually for 10 min and then in a
group of their peers for 10 min. That is why there seem to
be repeating catagories. so 1A is sheet one and A1A is
sheet two, there will be the same name present for the
three types of classroom activity. all that I want o do is
display it in a form but the form runs off this quiery
becaue there was too much data for all three data types
and both sheets to be on one table, so I have had to split
it up. THey data is meant to be locked together using the
ID number which the computer genertates. This is to ensure
data protection so that only we know that childs name. THe
ID number joins seem to behat is causeing the problems as
each type of classroom behaviour has an ID number present
on the Quiery in order to ensure we see the teacher led,
group and individual work for the same ID number on each
record. I know that its complicted, I couldn't make it
work any other way, believe me, I tried!

statement, I wonder if your data structure isn't causing you (and Access)
some issues. Queries are only as effective as the underlying data structure
they rely on.

Occasionally, a situation arises in a multiple table query in which you need
to use an Outer-Join. Oddly, sometimes Access allows you to do it, and
sometimes it gives you the very unhelpful "Ambiguous Outer Join" error.



Why? Well, to understand this and how to correct it, let's first determine
what an Ambiguous Outer Join is.



When Access processes a multiple table query, it needs to determine the
order in which joins should be made. Should it join Table1 to Table2 first
and then join Table3? Or should it do it in some other order. This is part
of the Rushmore technology of the Jet

engine. It tries to determine the most efficient way to process the query.



In the case of standard Equi-Joins, the query result will not vary based on
the order that they are joined. However, this is not the case with
Outer-Joins. There are times, when using an Outer-Join, that the result of
the query will be different depending on the order in which joins are
created. Access cannot now determine the order to join the tables. This is
an Ambiguous Outer Join.



Another way to explain it, is in terms of what you see in the QBE grid. A
table which participates in an Outer join and the arrow is pointing
*towards* it cannot participate in either an Inner Join, or another Outer
Join where the arrow points towards it.



Graphically:

These are illegal:

1) Table1 -----> Table2 ----- Table3

2) Table1 -----> Table2 <---- Table3



This is legal:

3) Table1 -----> Table2 ----> Table3



In order to solve this, you are going to have to split the query into a
stacked query, just like Access suggests you should in the error message.
So you create a query joining the first two tables and, in a second query,
join the first query to the third table.



Thus:

1) Query1:

Table1 -----> Table2



2) Query2:

Query1 ------ Table3
