an error in 2007 beta regarding compatability mode

Darren

I've been working in compatability mode with 96-2003 documents. I have found
that when I save them in 2007 beta, all the cell margins reset to default in
my tables when I open the file again.

Hi Darren,

There are a number of possibilities for table properties and construction, so I may have missed something that would appear in your
table that isn't included in my quick test.

I created a few tables in Word 2003 and Word 2000 where I manually set the properties of the cells to be 0.2" margins on each side.

I then added text (left, center, right, justify and distributed alignment text entries), saved the files, then opened them in Word
2007 and resaved in both .doc and .docx file types, closed and reopened the files in 2007 and the margins did not change.

In what version were these documents/tables orginally created?

Are these multipage, complex tables or any table where you're seeing this behavior?

What languages do you have enabled (Start=>Run=>Microsoft Office Tools) in Word 2007?

What version of Windows are you using?

Can you reproduce this behavior in a new document? If so, what are the steps you're using?

Yeah, I can reproduce it:

1. Create new document in Word 2002. Create a new table with a few columns.

2. Put text in all the cells so you can see the left margins. Then I select
some or all of the columns, right click, and go to Table Properties.

3. In the cell tab, I click Options, uncheck "Same as whole table" and set
all the margins to zero.

4. Save and quit.

5. Open the document in Word 2007. (it will be in Compatability Mode) Save
it and close it. Reopen it. Margins reset to default!

6. If I fix the margins back to zero in Word 2007, saving, closing and
reopening the file resets the margins again.

*Alternatively, I can reproduce the error by creating the new document in
2007 Beta, Saving As a '97-'03 document, closing, and reopening.
Interestingly, when I do it this way, I can visually see the margins
resetting themselves when I first Save As. If I set the margins to zero
again and save again, I don't see the margins reset until I reopen the file.

I've tried this with 3, 4, and 7 column tables. None of them longer than a
page.

I'm not sure how to check which languages are enabled, but I've never
changed any settings related to language on this computer in Windows or in
Office.

It's Windows XP with SP2.

Hi Darren,

Hmmm. I didn't duplicate the issue with your first example, starting with a .doc file created in Word 2002. I suspect that I may,
perhaps, be using a different 'autofit' setting.

However, in your second scenario the bug certainly reproduces when a table is created in a new Word 2007 and it is saved as a
legacy Word document rather than a .docx.
