An Old Repeat Question

S

Sylvia Morris

I have read the answers to the post back on 3/16 entitled 'an old repeat
question' about what to do with the white space padding in Publisher. I
decided to try the solution to go into page setup and change the layout from
portrait to landscape. I did that but it didn't change the look of the page.
Am I doing this right?

I know my lack of understanding on all these issues is shocking. I read a
'work-around' for this problem. This is what it said which is how I've gotten
'landscape versus portrait mixed up with it. The post says:

"You can change the fixed page width to as wide as you want under page setup.
I have a custom page that is 31 inches wide and 6.5 inches high to
accommodate a landscape image"

If it's not portrait and landscape issues, I'm not sure what I'm to change
to the widest possible in page setup for this 'work-around'.

Those are print orientations and have zero to do with a web publication.

There can always be some background displayed on the web page because
Publisher always codes flush left.

Sylvia,

I am the person you are quoting, and you should go back and read the
original post and the entire thread again, including Don's post. In my post
I was answering the question 'can you make the page wider'. I was using the
31" X 6.5" as only an example of the fact that you can make your pages as
wide as you want. I produced this single page for a special landscape image
that I created that was 3000 X 500 pixels. You certainly wouldn't want to
make your entire website that wide as it requires horizontal scrolling.

In Pub 2000 you go to Page Setup and you have three setup options. Standard
is 6", Wide is 7.5", and Custom where you can define any dimensions. In Pub
2003 I believe these dimensions are in pixels. You should probably use Wide
as your default, if you want to 'minimize' the white space. If you set it up
for anything wider than 7.5", you are probably going to have pages that
require horizontal scrolling on many monitors, and that is certainly worse
than having some white space. And for that matter if the viewer decides
they want to print your page, the pages will likely not print correctly.

Also reread and study the quote I included from David Bartosik. He discusses
the issue and describes a design technique that can help fool the eye. The
bottom line is that there really is nothing wrong with some white space.
Many high profile and sophisticated sites are designed this way.

I figured it out. Now, I'm centered.
