an rtf formatting question - linespacing (sort of)

Word 2000 and Win98SE Wordpad...

At the risk of sounding very negative, let me begin by saying that I have
always found MS Word to be one of THE most unintuitive word processors I
have ever used, especiallay when it comes to margins, indentation, page
layout, etc. Word is so often over-kill for any uses I have, I most often
use Wordpad as rtf documents. But this problem effects both applications.
That said... here is a question I would love to finally have answered.....

Why, when often I edit my rtf files I get the following problem....

I type a large body of text in a particular font and size...
I save the document.. everything is fine.
I copy text from another document...
I paste it into my first rtf file

I highlight the pasted body of text and select the same font and size as the
rest of the text.

* The line spacing is wider * No paragraph or page layout parameters to
change it.!!
What exactly is this called? How can it be adjusted so that the additional
text is not a different line-spacing? a small sample rtf with the behavior
is attached

What is causing this?

Thanks.

Any website that addresses Word and Wordpad formatting and margins/indents
FAQs is much appreciated, also.

Now where would a person find out that a return(enter)=paragraph break and
shift+return(enter)=line break??? LOL I have never come across that in
ANY user guide.
