Analyze It with MS Excel disabled...

Hello all,

I have a Windows XP sp2 box running Office 97 sp2b and the Analyze It with
MS Excel and Publish It with MS Word options under the OfficeLinks menu item
are disabled. Is there any way to get these enabled again?

I am also running Outlook 2003 that was installed from the Windows 2003 SBS
Client Apps, if that makes any difference.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

It's quite possible that installing Outlook 2003 over Office 97 has
screwed things up. I've never dared try it myself<g>.

What's really odd about your message is that there should be three items
under Office Links: Merge It with MS Word, Publish (Word), and Analyze
(Excel). Are you saying that Merge is working but the other two are
grayed out? If so, I can't imagine what's happening.

But the first thing to try is to re-register some DLLs that Access uses
for importing and exporting. What follows are generic instructions. It
does no harm to re-register all these files.

If the import/export wizards or Office Links don't work at all, or if
you get "No object in this control" re-register ACCWIZ.DLL.

If it's one or more file formats that aren't listed in the wizards,
re-register the following files
msexcl40.dll (Excel)
msxbse40.dll (dBase)
mspdox40.dll (Paradox)
mstext40.dll (Text, CSV, tab-delimited))
In Access 97, the filenames contain 35 instead of 40.

To re-register a DLL file,

1) Locate it (usually all these are in the Windows\System32 or
WINNT\System32 folder.

2) Locate the file regsvr32.exe.

3) Drag the DLL file's icon onto the regsvr32.exe icon.

Thanks for the reply John,

In the end it simply turned out to be an incorrect setting of the
Compatibility Mode on each of the Office 97 programs. I was originally
experiencing troubles with it set to Windows 95 and then I changed it to
Windows 2000. As it turns out it does not need any compatibility settings at
all. With nothing set the two disabled items are back enabled again.
