Analyze with Excel - text format problem in Access 2000

I have an Access 2000 report which includes, in the details section, a
textbox holding text data which is in the form of two numbers separated by a
slash (eg. 01/036, 02/492, 99/201 etc - it represents a year and a
sequential number, and its format is immutable!). Exporting the report to
Excel, via the "Analyze with Excel" link on the toolbar, converts these text
fields to dates and they are stored in the Excel sheet as numbers (eg.
01/003 is exported as 38047, and if I format the Excel cell as date format,
it appears as 01/03/2004 - in dd/mm/yyyy format). If the "apparent" date is
illegal, the numbers are large negative numbers - back in the dark ages,
pre-computers ;-) . This does NOT happen with the same database in Access
97 format - the exported report gives cells which contain the strings as
text.

Exporting data containing these text strings direct from the table in the
A2K database also works correctly (except that the data in the spreadsheet
contains the ' character as the text format indicator, visible in the
formula bar but not in the cells).

What's broken with the "Analyze with Excel" functionality in A2K, and how
can I fix it? Is it fixable?

Rob

PS. Access 2000 export is to Excel XP, Access 97 export is to Excel 97;
running on different computers. Access 2000 problem occurs on several
computers; and although I don't have system set-up to check at present, my
recollection is that export from Access 97 to Excel 2000 worked fine.
