Ancient Xcel update question

I did a baaaaaaaad thing. This morning I updated our bookkeeper's
iMac G3 from OS 8.6 to 9.1 to install a new printer driver that only
works with 9.1 or higher. Now, her Xcel (5.0 if you can believe it)
is crashy and none of the pull down menus work. Keyboard shortcuts
do, though. All other programs seem fine.

Apparently we need to update Xcel to something higher than 5.0 and I
know absolutely nothing about this program. Can you make the jump to
the latest version and still read files from 5.0? Does anyone know
for sure if jumping to 9.1 from 8.6 would have caused this. Thanks
for any insight you can provide.

Yes. Any of the "higher" versions (98 or 2001) will.

Yes. Excel 5 is known not to be compatible with Mac OS 9. Curiously enough,
Excel 4 was reported running. But you'll have to upgrade to Excel 98 (not
for sale any more, but you ay find some second hand versions on eBay or so)
or to excel:2001, which will be the last OS9 version.
