animated gifs and transparency

Can you make an animated gif transparent. Ie. I have an animated penny but
when I put it on a colored background you can see a big white square around
it.

Yes, of course you can, but you have to be the one creating the animated gif
and you have to set the transparency dithering color to something close to
your background. If you have downloaded an animated gif from another source,
you can't do anything with it unless you are capable of creating your own
from scratch.

If you have a gif animator program, you can break apart the frames and
recreate it.
