Animation - Hiding sub-groups of text

I would like to set up a slide with multiple bullets, each containing a
number of child bullets. From there, I want each main bullet to appear in
sequence (as I click the mouse) and display all child bullets as the parent
appears. (I had no problem getting this working.) Next... as each
subsequent main bullet appears, I want to hide the child bullets of the
previous main bullet(s). This is what I can't get working (properly).

I've tried using the "hide text on next mouse click" for the previous child
bullets, but it's not having the intended effect. This animation simply
hides the text, but does not collapse the resulting white-space.

Is there a way can I collapse this whitespace? (Using animation rather than
multiple slides.)

Which version of PowerPoint do you use? I would insert a text box for each
main bullet and its child bullets. Arrange them so, that the main bullets
are in the right order and distances (overlapping the child bullets of each
other, but we will hide that with animation). Now apply the following
animations:

1. Entrance main bullet No. 1, on mouse click

2. Entrance child bullets No. 1, with or after previous (i.e. with or after
main bullet No.1)

3. Exit child bullets No. 1, on mouse click (main bullet No. 1 stays on
screen)

4. Entrance main bullet No. 2, with or after previous

5. Entrance child bullets No. 2, with or after previous

6. Repeat steps 3 to 5.

That leaves the main bullets on the screen, but next main bullet replaces
child bullets of the previous.
(These animations are only available in PowerPoint 2002 or 2003.)

I hear what you're saying about multiple slides but unless you have a good
reason I think that would be the best way and give the most professional
effect.
