Animation: How do I emulate drop-down menus?

I am creating a presentation that will allow me to jump to any slide by
selecting a hyperlinked text box. (In effect, I am emulating a web site
interface.) The text box is part of an animation that "triggers" when I click
on a "top level" menu item. For example, I click on "Value Proposition" (my
Trigger) a group of hyperlinked text boxes appears and I can then click on
the box that is linked to the slide I want to display. This works very well.

My problem is this: When I return to the originating page the animated
"menu" is still displayed. Using "Appear > Effect tab > After animation: Hide
on Next Mouse Click" I can cause the menu to disapear by clicking on the "top
level" menu item; I would prefer that it would not be there when I return to
the slide, without requiring the extra mouse click. Is there a way to "reset"
a slide to its "pre-animation" state after you have moved on to another
slide? Apparently the click to activate the hyperlink does not "count" as a
"next click".

By default, when you return to a slide, you come back at the "end" of that
slide (after animations.) In order to get around that, try the following:

Put another slide just before it with your main images on it and set it's
slide transition to automatically transition after 0 seconds. Then
hyperlink back to that slide. This will immediately take you to your
desired slide (at the beginning).

The following only works in PPT 2002 and later. But since you already
mentioned triggers, I am guessing you have one of those versions....

What you want to do is to add an exit animation for the menu that is
triggered by the click on the object holding the hyperlink. First add an
exit animation for the boxes you want to disappear. Next, change those
animations to be triggered by one of the hyperlink objects. Now comes the
only tricky part: repeat those two sets so that you have one triggered
series of exit animations (that affect your menus) for each object that
contains a hyperlink. Set all of the exits to happen with previous and drag
them under the appropriate trigger list.

This sounds much more complicated than it really is. Do the first one and
the process for rest of them will become clear.

Thank-you, Bill. This worked perfectly. It also reminded me to get your
proof-of-concept down pat before you finish the presentation. I had to re-do
dozens of links and animations. So it goes.

Dann,

Glad it worked. I feel your pain. However, just think how much more
proficient you are at linking and animating now! <grin>
