[ANN] New installer for 12.0.1

Diane Ross

MacBu released a new installer for the Office 2008 Update 12.0.1 today. This
is not new Office bits to be installed, but the installer itself that was
changed. This change was a result of problems experienced by some Office
2008 users having a failed update to 12.0.1. If you are one of the
unfortunate few that had problems, this patch is for you. If you were able
to successfully update to 12.0.1 then you do not need this patch.

Does this new installer fix *all* the "502" permissions errors?

Anybody try this yet?

If I downloaded/applied 12.0.1 manually, and thus now 12.0.1 doesn't show in
View Installed Updates, should I go through this procedure (Remove Office;
install from DVD; Restart Computer; Run AutoUpdate) if I want to
automatically apply future updates?

The new update is for people who had problems applying the old one (eg:
you couldn't select your boot drive, or ENtourage would remain in 12.0).
FOr the rest of us who managed to install the previous one, there is
nothing else you need. There is nothing new in the new updater except
for the update installer itself.

Just to be clear. The Office bits are unchanged. It's the actual package
installer that was improved to enable a better install for some users.

Took me a few round with the developer before I got it too.

It sounds like the answer is _Yes_. You were not fully installed and are
still at 12.0.0. This is for you. If I am misunderstanding you and you are
at 12.0.1 then forgot this.

Diane,

Is there a specific link to follow to get the updated updater? I just
downloaded the updater from Microsoft and am still seeing the "old"
version-no modification dates on any of the contents after 3/12/08.

I would expect to find a modification date sometime in the past week.

Thanks.

Cheers,
Jon

What you're probably looking at is the *old* version of AutoUpdate that
served Office 2004. The AutoUpdate app for 2008 isn't stored in the
Applications folder, and the one that's there isn't the one being updated.

Easiest way to confirm your version is to use Help> Check for Updates in one
of the Office 2008 apps, then use Microsoft AutoUpdate> About AutoUpdate.

I was confused too at first. The developer explained the change is not the
bits in the updater, it's in the installer for the updater. Therefore the
version number did not change. It's the delivery method that changed. If you
follow the article it directs you to "Remove Office" and re-install. You
cannot just apply the new updater.
