[ANN] The Entourage Help Blog: "Connect Entourage 2004 to Gmail’s IMAP service"

W

William Smith

Since Google’s announcement in late October that it would offer free
IMAP service for users of its Gmail service, news sites, blogs and
forums have been abuzz with the expanded capabilities. Gmail’s message
search engine, generous 5GB storage capacity and excellent spam
filtering makes dealing with E-mail easy and Google is also enticing
iPhone users to its IMAP service by providing detailed setup
instructions. Now, because of IMAP, Gmail users can take advantage of
all these features from multiple computers and devices while maintaining
just one message store.

To configure Entourage 2004 to connect to Gmail via IMAP, go to
http://mail.google.com, open an account or login and follow these
instructions...

Very nice,

I was looking for a clean cut walk through of this and it seems like
your blog's got it.

I'm bookmarking this site. I'll be setting up my Entourage 2004 to
use gmail's IMAP in the next few days once my new.. er.. refurbished
15" 2.2ghz MacBook Pro arrives in the mail. I don't feel like doing
anything sudden on my current MacBook Pro.

Once I have my gmail set up via IMAP, one of my big tasks is to move
mail off all my local folders/local computer onto Gmail's webservers
and delete them locally.

Just spent days organizing and imputing my contact lists and at first I got error message 5.5.O , mail could not be sent 17099, when I inserted group in any sender box, (but would prefer it to send out my 25 member group in BCC) and would get this message unless I dragged the contacts individually and only up to 5 into the address bar. And now, days later
even sending out individual letters I get this message. Can't find it in Entourage help and ready to switch to g-mail. Will I be able to import my contacts list in full. Will it print out a list of my contacts spreadsheet like ( I've can snapshaategory colors and unreadable). Right now I can only print it out a couple entries to a page, which means wasting 48 pages instead of 2.
Not environmental and not practical. Please, any help much apprceciated or any other suggestions.
Such a time abyss.

The info below comes from the Entourage Help Page website, created by
Entourage users
<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/error/page.html#error-17099>

Error -17099
Relaying to <the email address> prohibited by administrator Email could
not be sent Account name (my account name) Error -17099
Error -17099 is an Entourage error kSMTPServerReplyErr, and is returned
when the SMTP server has returned a permanent or transient error or
returns an unexpected result code.
This error is coming from your ISP.
Users have reported this error when sending to large groups. ISPs limit
the number in a group. Usual number is 50 recipients to avoid spammer
misuse. Entourage has no limit. You should contact your mail provider to
ascertain the maximum number of recipients per message and note it. You
can use the free "Split Recipients" script to send a mass e-mail in
separate mailings automatically:
Split Recipients for Entourage 2001
Split Recipients for Entourage X
Most ISPs also require you to use their SMTP address when sending.

Was this 17099 or -17099.

-17099 indicates the group is too large and exceed your ISPs limit.

I'm confused. Are you trying to import from Gmail account?

I believe you can export your Gmail Address Book as a .csv file. Entourage
can import this file.

Importing Contacts --> CSV files

File Import
Click Contacts or messages from a text file, and then click the right arrow.
Click Import contacts from a tab- or comma-delimited text file, and then
click the right arrow. Locate the text file that you want to import, and
then click Import.

Even though it does not specifically indicate CSV file, it will import this.
I have reported this to Help and it should be added soon.
Click Import contacts from a CSV , tab- or comma-delimited text file.

In Entourage you will need to create your Groups. Just type in the name of
the group and it will automatically add each contact in that group.

Thanks for your help!

Error message -17099 means its too big (25 contacts in a group are too many? ISP

What is Error 5.1.1.?
Is there some place I can look this up?

And shouldnt I be able to send out my group from the Bcc window?...it chokes and gives me error messages no matter which sender window I insert it in. I also get 'not our Customer" error messages.

Also, cant seem to send a message out from the draft folder, must copy and paste message into new message and send from there and it delivers.

All these kinks, we've re installed the program thinking that might fix the problems, but no luck.

At this point, I need working email. I'm about to launch a campaign and need a program that I can export my entourage contact list into another program that functions on a Mac. I just looked it up, G-mail cant take info from Entourage. not yet. Do you know which mac compatible program can digest my contact list files?

thanks

ISP

Depends on your ISP.
What is Error 5.1.1.?

I did not find this one listed.
Is there some place I can look this up?

There is no official list. We do have many error posted on the Error Page.
Some is only text errors and you will need to check both the numbered errors
and text errors. For easy searching use your browser's Find command (cmd-f)
under Edit in the menu bar.

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/error/page.html>

And shouldnt I be able to send out my group from the Bcc window?
Yes

...it chokes
and gives me error messages no matter which sender window I insert it in. I
also get 'not our Customer" error messages.

Not our customer sounds like it's coming from your ISP.
Also, cant seem to send a message out from the draft folder, must copy and
paste message into new message and send from there and it delivers.

If you open the message in Draft, does it send then?
All these kinks, we've re installed the program thinking that might fix the

You haven't given enough info to help you further. It sounds like you might
be using an Exchange account, but that's just a guess. If you want help you
need to be specific.
At this point, I need working email.

You are having problems, but not everyone is. The problem you are having is
on your end. We will be happy to help you, but we need more info than you
are giving.
I'm about to launch a campaign and need a

not yet. Do you know which mac compatible program can digest my contact list
files?

If you look at Gmail instructions you can get your Entourage contacts into
Gmail.
