[Announce] Word 2008 "crash on launch/quit" - Workarounds

B

Beth Rosengard

Microsoft has confirmed that a *possible* cause for Word 2008 crashing on
launch (or quit) is the presence of preference files from previous versions
of Word. If you have this problem, try one of these workarounds:

1. Quit out of all versions of Word and trash (or rename) all Word
preference files *prior* to Word 2004:

Home/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Word Settings (10)

HD/OS 9 System Folder/Preferences/Microsoft/ Word Settings (9)

HD/OS 9 System Folder/Preferences/Microsoft/ Word Settings (8)

2. Hold down the Shift key when launching Word. (This bypasses the First
Run Update process so Office doesn't go looking for previous version
preference files.) Unfortunately, this tells Word not to load any prefs at
all even Word 2008 prefs and you will need to do this on every launch,
so it's not a long-term workaround.

After renaming the Word preferences inside the user's home folder and relaunching Word, it launched well and runs like it should. Thank you for the information.
Wow. Renaming the preferences to fool the application into creating new ones. I learned that trick in System 7 and Word Ver. 5- and have since forgotten it.

REALLY?!? As far as I know, it's never stopped being applicable
across-the-board--I've done it for a million programs, not just Word,
ever since I learned it, in OS 9, OS X, everything. Recently I've seen
it suggested for Pages, CocoaBooklet, iPhoto.....

Hi, I'm having problems launching Word. It never opens, I've tried deleting pref files, I've tried holding Shift and opening Word, I've tried completely removing and reinstalling Office. I had Office 2004 a while back, but Word 2008 worked fine up until tonight. I had read somewhere that disabling Beamsync caused problems with Office. I did disable Beamsync the other night, but I re-enabling it, and it still crashes. Here's what I'm getting:

That "looks" as if it might be a bad font.

Disable all the fonts that were not sent to you by Apple or Microsoft,
reboot the computer (essential!) and try again. If it's good now, then
bring your fonts back, a few at a time, until you find the bad
(incompatible) one (the problem will come back when you do, and there may be
more than one...).

The other thing to try is dragging your Normal.dotm template and the Normal
template from your MUD to the desktop. This forces a rebuild of the
Normal.dotm.

Hope this helps

Disable Quartz 2D extreme or Quartz GL depending on how it is listed
in your version of quartz debug. If you tweaked you system and enabled
it that is what what may be killing word.

As I said earlier: sounds like a good tip, so please tell us HOW :)
