Annoying auto character insert problem

J

I am editing a manuscript that was created by someone else. When I go to insert a colon, semicolon, or question mark, Word automatically inserts a wierd space before the character (it looks like a regular space dot with a tilde over it). When I print the document, there is an unwanted space after each word followed by the punctuation characters described above. Autocorrect does not seem to correct this problem. I'm using Word version 9 for Mac on a Word 2001 document created on a PC. Thanks for any an all help.

Sounds like you've got another keyboard language enabled. This is normal, I
think, in French (at least the colon). What sort of quotes are you getting?
