Annoying Grid Lines

I receive a lot of Word .docs created in the Windows version of the
program. About a third of them have a background of what looks like
table grid lines of small squares. They don't print, but they are
distracting to work with. What I usually end up doing is to copy/paste
into a new document which seems to get rid of them.

What is this all about? And is there a way to get rid of them without a
copy/paste?

Are these docs from students by any chance? I don't know if this is a new
"trend" among the high school set or whether it's just coincidence, but I've
seen several posts on this recently.

You should be able to just launch the Drawing Toolbar & turn the Grid off.
However, it's a per document setting - but still beats copy/paste every
time:)

You can move the Grid icon to your regular toolbar, of course, for easy
per-document access.

Wild guess that WinWord has some sort of issue that turns this on and no
one knows how to turn it off, rather than a new trend. But, of course,
MS Word makes trends. :)

No, not from students. I can't imagine what benefit they could be to
anyone, unless it has to do with the precise positioning of graphics and
text boxes or something.

I'll definitely try the Drawing Toolbar next time I encounter it. Thanks
for the tip.

I did receive confirmation from one college professor - seems that one of
her students had created a paper using the grid & the paper had been
circulated among other students who made some individual changes & submitted
as their own work - without turning the grid off:)

There's an easier/quicker way to hide (or show, or tweak) the Grid in Word 2008.

1. Word menu > Preferences
2. In Preferences, under Authoring and proofing Tools, click Edit
3. Under Editing Options, click Grid Options...
4. Uncheck (or check) the "Display gridlines on screen" checkbox.

First, show the Drawing toolbar (View > Toolbars > Drawing). Select the second icon from the top, which looks like a grid. A dialog box will come up. Uncheck the box "Display gridlines on screen." This will remove the grids.
