Whenever I start to write a letter, I get the little guy asking me if I
want help in letter writing. Is there a way to stop this?

What I do is to disable the little guy completely. Uncheck Help > Use
Office Assistant (that's the little guy's name, apparently). I haven't
seen him in years. m.
