annoying new behavior in tables in Word 2003

I do a lot of tables and have gotten used to simply pointing the mouse near
the left border of the table and thus selecting the entire row.

Now with Word 2003 this has stopped, and I find I can select only the
leftmost cell by dragging the mouse near the left border.

This sounds like a small thing, but it's incredibly annoying for someone
that does a lot of this. Is there a fix?
