I've just found the same in a word 2003 installation where the user has save some documents as this.and.that.doc.
Word has never benn godd on docs with long path names and dots on filenames. In this case it payed to delete the files with dots on their names in the "my recent documents" folder.
Hope this helps someone.

I forgot to mention, and this I think was the real reason for the "out of
memory" error: "my recent documents" , defined in a roaming profile easily
create a very long path with long filenames.
Deleting the files there, and begining from scratch, erradicated the problem.
