Another Outlook 02 PST TO 03 Transfer

From the MS Outlook “BackUp PST ea 3-Days Utility†I have a 9.5 MB Data file
NAMED “Outlook Backup†FROM Outlook 2002 /Win Me.
. I SAVED ALL of the Application Data/Microsoft/Outlook folder TOO with
numerous small files included (ie. nk2/outcmd) with the 9.5 MB Backup data
file.
I NOW have Win XP and Outlook 2003. In Tools/Email Accounts / New Outlook
Data File they show the Default 03 PST format NOT Compatible with 02 BUT they
offer a 2nd Choice Format that is. I Clk'd New Data File and created
“Personal Folders 02-03†in the 97-03 Format. When I Clk File/Open/Outlook
Data File I see both the Default Personal Folder and my new 02-03 Personal
Folder. In the Outlook main page viewing pane showing all the Folders I see a
SECOND Personal Folder (has Deleted & Search folders I Did Not create) &
Presume that's the One I Created. I've read myself into a corner with New
Profile, New Data File instructions running together from numerous posts. Any
help really appreciated as to how to move the 02 PST Backup Data to 03
Outlook.

Why would you create a new PST file? That's not what you wanted to do. Why
didn't you just open your Outlook 2002 file in Outlook 2003? It's perfectly
compatible.

Thanks Russ for the Reply. I thought I read where a new Data File had to be
created and it specifically states via Tools/Email Accts/Change existing/New
Data File that the Folder sitting there IS NOT Compatible with 97-02 BUT the
one below it is. That's why the New Folder seemed necessary. Having said
that, what does Open 02 in 03 mean in actual keystrokes? Thanks!

Why would you create a new PST file? That's not what you wanted to do. Why
didn't you just open your Outlook 2002 file in Outlook 2003? It's perfectly
compatible.

Thanks, Brian. It won't work with 2002, Only 03 & 07.

Right. It does convert an ANSI PST to Unicode, but it needs Outlook 2003 or
2007 to operate. However, there's no need to convert an ANSI PST to Unicode
to use it in Outlook 2003 and you said that you "have Win XP and Outlook
2003". You have no problem.

Brian: Sorry I was out-of-town. DnLoaded Upstart Free. New to XP, a Search
for Outlook.PST was done and I copied the Path. Please confirm that I make
the following Command Line parameter Entry, Copy and paste into RUN, and all
should transfer as Unicode into 2003 Outlook. Many Many thanks.
Upstart C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator\My Documents\Craig
Files\OUTLOOK PST BACKUP\Backup.PST C:\Documents and
Settings\HP_Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook
/E=C
There's a Space between Upstart and C:, between two pats, and between .PST
and /E=C

I've never used Upstart, but I know that Peter Maclean will answer your
question if you write to him. His mail address is on his web site. In
fact, he sometimes reads these newsgroups.

Brian, if you're still there, I'm ready to try the Upstart Free utility but
need the following: Pete MacLean indicated that after converting the 02 ANSI
PST to Unicode I need to Rename the "Current" Outlook PST to something like
"Outlook.old". (1) If something goes wrong in the Utility, I presume I can
Rename back to Outlook.PST and recover everything as before. Right? (2) Must
I Rename Prior to Running the Utility Conversion and does Renaming to
Outlook.old have anything to do with being able to Re-Open Outlook if
something goes wrong with Upstart? Many thanks. I'll give you the How-To from
Pete's Help after this is done.

Brian, if you're still there, I'm ready to try the Upstart Free
utility but need the following: Pete MacLean indicated that after
converting the 02 ANSI PST to Unicode I need to Rename the "Current"
Outlook PST to something like "Outlook.old".

I'm not sure why that would be. If you have the old PST in the mail
profile, renaming it without first removing it from the profile is a good
way to corrupt the mail profile.

(1) If something goes
wrong in the Utility, I presume I can Rename back to Outlook.PST and
recover everything as before. Right?

As long as you keep the original PST or a copy thereof, you should be able
to restore things as they were.

(2) Must I Rename Prior to Running the Utility Conversion

Beats me. I've never used the tool. However, I'll reiterate: if the
ANSI-format PST is still a part of your mail profile, avoid renaming it.

and does Renaming to Outlook.old have

Not at all.

know anyone who can look at this and confirm it's written correctly? The (3)
paths each in quotes are the location of Upstart app, the location of Outlook
backup.pst to be converted from ANSI to Unicode, and the target site for the
converted files to go.

backup.pst†“C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator\Local
Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst†/E=B
There is a Space between each path and /E=B is Best Encryption.
If 2002 ANSI .PST is converted to Unicode and the current Outlook.pst is
Unicode, I'm not sure why he said to Rename the current one, but he did. I
asked if the inclusion of Outlook.pst at the end of the "Target path" was
What the New File Would be Named after Upstart converted to Unicode, as
opposed to it being a "Target" the app would look for that wouldn't exist if
I renamed it (.OLD). He said he didn't understand the question. Do you see
what I’m asking or know anyone who can look at this? Transferring 02 to 03
shouldn't be this hard. Many Thanks!

This could be your problem. The opening quote should preceed the C

"C:\Program Files\UPSTART\upstart"

In Command Prompt it starts with C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator>
and I'm doing cd c:\ and getting C:\> with the cursor Flashing after the >. I
can't backspace to put the quotes before the C, and entering "C:\Program etc
after the C:\> gives a syntax error. Any other idea? Thanks for your Help,

Brian: I've found a work-around on Contacts and am moving on. I had followed
an old post to hi-light one contact name, do Cntrl A (select all), Cntrl V
(copy) and paste in a folder made on the desktop. Makes numerous lines of ea
Contact with a little icon beside it, and I could in 2002 just Dbl Clk and
the page would Open as though done from inside outlook.I tried dragging one
of the resulting icons into the 2003 Contact empty space on the page and it
worked. Still don't understand the new data File link showing two PST Formats
with one being 03 only, the other 97-02; As long as the data from my o2
Contacts is readable, i don't care. Thanks for all your time.
