Another page numbering problem

M

Margaret

I apologize if this has already been asked and answered; if it has, I
couldn't find it.

I have a 24-page document that I need to number, starting with number 2 on
page 4 of the document. IOW, the first 2 pages have no numbers, page 3 is
actually page 1 (but doesn't show the 1), and the numbering should commence
with 2 on page 4.

I created a section break after the first 2 pages, but then following MS's
instructions left me with *my* page 1 numbered as page 2. After fooling
with that for about an hour (no luck), I deleted that section break and made
a new one after the 3rd page. Now my document has a number 2 on page 4 of
my document--that's what I want--but there are no numbers on the following
pages, only the 2 on page 4. If I could just get it to number all
subsequent pages (like it's supposed to) then I'd have it made.

Can anyone help with this?

From your description it's not entirely clear what might be happening, but I
suspect it's some combination of Page Setup: Layout settings and the state
of the Same as Previous button. Have a look at
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/NumberingFrontMatter.htm for the
general principles of this kind of setup.

I would suggest that this is what you need:

1. Section break between pages 2 and 3.

2. Turn off "Same as Previous" in section 2.

3. Leave the header/footer blank in section 1.

4. In section 2, click on the Page Setup button on the Header and Footer
toolbar. On the Layout tab of Page Setup, check the box for "Different first
page."

5. You'll now have a First Page Header/Footer in section 2. Leave it empty
and click Show Next to go to the Header/Footer.

6. Use the Insert Page Number button to insert a page number field.

7. Click on Format Page Number and set it to "Start at 1."
