Another Table of Contents question...and answer

I'm in a document that has Outlined Numbered Heading Styles. I want to
generate a TOC that displays 2 levels.
The Heading 1 style is centered, starting with the number I. There is
a space after it.
The Heading 2 style is left aligned, starting with the number Section
1.01. There is a space after it followed by a style separator and
normal text.
When I generate my TOC, the first entry should be:
I Introduction..............2
but instead I get:
I...........................2
*Introduction...............2

The * indicates a space. Only the first entry appears this way, the
other Heading 1 entries appear perfectly.

There doesn't appear to be a previous Heading 1 entry that would maybe
cause the I to appear all alone.

I even changed the Heading 1 style to be followed by a Tab instead of a
space. Still, nothing changed. While all this is going on, I notice
when I did update the TOC, I didn't get the little prompt asking me if
I wanted to update just the Page numbers or the entire table.

Soooo I decided to delete the TOC and start fresh. After it was
deleted, I went into Insert, Reference, so forth and so on, clicked OK
and was prompted if I wanted to replace the table of contents. This
made me suspicious. Why was I being asked if I wanted to replace the
TOC when it was recently deleted. Was my TOC still in my document but
leaking behind the scenes? I selected yes to replace and my TOC was not
there!

My next step was to save the document, select the entire document
except for the last paragraph mark, copy it, and paste it into a new
blank word document and quess what. It worked!

Could I have been working in a corrupted document?

Check to see whether you have a manual page break before the first Heading
1. A page break acquires the formatting (style) of the following paragraph
and so will be picked up by the TOC. If this is the problem, format the
heading paragraph (or style) as "Page break before" instead of using a
manual page break.
