I too was hit with the Windows auto update problem that froze many Office
applications and made IE unresponsive. The fix is described in
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/918165
The problem is described as related to an older HP software application I
had called "Share-to-Web." Sure enough, when I uninstalled "Share-to-Web" and
rebooted, my Word files and Office applications began to work again....EXCEPT
my Briefcase has now lost all of its file associations - all Briefcase files
are ophans now. Geez.....
