Insert a caption. In the popup enter your caption text. As part of the text insert a perfectly reasonable '/' character - the help window pops up.

Yeah: Amusing, isn't it :) I think you are one of about three people in
the world that managed to find that bug.

It's on their list for a fix sometime. However, you could use Help: Send
Feedback to record your "vote" for a fix so that it moves up the priority
list a bit.

Many of these little cosmetic issues sit around for years before they get
fixed, unless a heap of people run into them and report them.

Cheers

Hi:
Yes, both amusing and annoying. As John says, we know about this issue and
we are working on it (really). In the meantime, you can paste this character
into the edit box to get around the problem.

Thanks,

Curt

another annoying bug......

When using the caption feature, word almost randomly assigns a figure number to the caption. And if you change one it goes back and changes the others.

That's not a bug, that's "user error".

Sorry: when you know how the caption feature works, it won't happen. :)
If you're interested, read on...

When you insert a caption in Word, it inserts a 'structure' with four
components: Style, Label, Field, and Bookmark.

The first thing Word does is auto-detect whether the object you have
selected is a Table, Figure, or "other".

Next, it inserts a paragraph and applies the Caption style to that
paragraph, to set the typographic formatting.

At the beginning of the paragraph, Word adds the caption Label (the word
'Figure' or 'Table' and a SEQ field. Then it waits for you to type the
caption you want.

Word encases the entire caption label in a bookmark. That becomes the
source for any cross-reference you may insert in the text referring to the
caption.

Within the SEQ field is the "Identifier". This is a name that identifies
the series of captions that this one is a member of. This will usually be
the word "Table" if this caption is a table, or "Figure" if it is a figure.

When you update the fields in the document (just before you print) Word will
collect all SEQ fields in the document and sort them by series. It then
updates the number displayed by each field to be the next highest in
sequence from the front of the document.

So for example: If you have inserted 120 captions in the document, 40 may
be figures, and 60 may be equations, and 20 may be tables. Word sorts all
the SEQ fields with the ID "Figure" into order of their position in the
document and numbers them 1 to 40. It then sorts all the SEQ fields with
the ID "Equation" and numbers them 1 to 60. It does the same for the tables
and numbers them 1 to 20.

The SEQ field is a very old counter that goes back to the very first version
of Word, and it is high time it was replaced!

The major disadvantage of the SEQ field is that it is a "Cold" field. Word
has three kinds of fields: Hot fields, which update dynamically. The PAGE
number field is an example. Warm fields update only when defined events
occur in the document. The DATE field is an example: it updates every time
the document is opened. And Cold fields update only when the user updates
the fields in the that particular story of that particular document.

That's what gives the apparently random results! If your SEQ field is not
in the Main Text Story of the document, it won't update when you update
fields. And there is a bug in the caption mechanism that places captions in
floating text boxes, which are not in the main text story.

Yeah, OK, so it IS complex {Sigh}... :)

I recommend that you replace the SEQ fields in Captions with ListNum fields.
These are a modern equivalent. They ARE hot fields, so you never have to
think about updating them.

Hope this helps
