me, sometimes i can and other times it just appears blank.
i have windows nt and excel 97, i have already changed my
user profile andhave thecorrect user privalages, it is not
the computer as it happens only with me on a number of
them and we have already tried re-installing office 97!

How are you getting the file into your computer?.......floppy, CD, email,
Network?.......try doing it a different way.......try different combinations
of things using different pieces of equipment and media and software and try
to isolate a common demoninator as to when the problem occurs and when it
works......keep a record so you can remember what works and what
don't........

OK......you may have Anti-Virus software running there which causes my Excel
to take forever to load, leaving me with just a grey screen for a long
time...........that may be the problem, you're just not waiting long enough
for it to load.........another thing is, the file may be set to "Page Break
Preview" which gives a grey screen also.......try View > Normal......see if
this brings it back to looking like a spreadsheet......

Just another check:

First thing I would check is to see if the workbook actually opened, but off the
viewable screen.

Click on Window on the menubar. Do you see the workbook name at the bottom of
the dropdown? If it does appear, try Window|arrange|tiled and resize by hand.
(I think sharing workbooks with Laptop users can cause this problem--they
sometimes use different display settings.)
