Anti SPAM Email Address Modification

M

Mike Dalton

This is not really a question about MS Word. I notice that whenever I
post a question to this group or any other Google group the amount of
SPAM I receive increases greatly. I feel there is someone out there
lifting email addresses from the group and using them to send SPAM. I
notice that many of you haave modified your email addresses to make
them invalid but have included instructions on how to remove the
modification to create a valid address.
My question is how do you get the modified email address into your
posting. Whenever I am in the group and go to post a message I am not
given the opporunity to modify my message. How do any of you do It??
Thanks for any and all help.

Mike,

You are correct, you will receive more spam mail when using your email
address. There are web bots, like robots or software that acts as
such, that pull email addresses from the newsgroups. To eliminate
this people can do a couple of things.

1. Create a junk email account that you don't care about filling up
with junk or that you can put maximum filters on.
Note: If you use Google to read and post to the newsgroups it has to
be a valid email address, to my knowledge. So you can't modify the
email address like "dasbot00@hotmail(NOSPAM).invalid.com".

2. Use email software like Outlook Express to read the newsgroups and
set your from and reply to settings to your invlaid email address.
The settings are located in Tools | Accounts then select the News tab.
In the account listing select the account you are using and click
properties on the right side or you can double right click on the
account to pull up the settings. Change them and click OK.

There may be other methods, but I'm not aware of them at this point.
Hope this helps!

Tony
