Has anyone any experience of using a piece of software which can convert a
passage of English into Portuguese (Brazilian) I am trying to communicate
with my son's future wife who does not speak English and I do not speak
Portuguese.

Many thanks Sian
PS have just downloaded the key board converter from Microsoft thinking that
would work, but it does not unless I don't understand what to do that is !!

I think that so far those programs are trash. I've tried a couple to
translate to spanish, or spanish to English, but the results are embarassing.
My web site www.widman.biz is in spanish. The other day I let Google
translate it to open in english and it was so far from the real thing it was
terrible.

There different sites that will translate but they tend to
be...........well, crappy. The best thing is to hire a translator or (and
this is what I would do) get a Portuguese/English dictionary and a CD for
learning the basics and start to learn the language. I think she'd be
touched to know that you cared enough to at least try her language.

There is no program that can do an adaquate job of translating one
language to another. When I was in college back in the mid-sixties,
machine-translation researchers believed they had the problem almost
solved. Forty years later we understand that they're not even close.

Try http://www.systranet.com

If you keep your sentences simple and as clear as possible you'll be
understood. If you write like most of us speak the translations will be
wacked. Pretend you're composing a 8th grade report...then translate it back
an forth a few times. Don't expect perfect results from any mechanical
translator though.

Better yet is go to a english / portugese forum on the internet and ask for
help.
