I have a 2005 12" 1,GHz PB with max memory (1,25 Gb).

The PP 2004 is so painfully slow that while writing text on slide it
takes about an second to one character to show up while typing...since
I do touch type the screen update is usually several words behind.
Since I do presentations every day this has started to irritate me
quite a lot recently. I do not want to go back to v.X since the
presentation tools are so great.

I noticed that there were several posts on this topic last year but I
did not see any recently.

Is there any way that I can speed things up?

Other thing is that PP has been extremely unstable. It crashes almost
every day and since the autorecovery does not seem to work I am
thinking of moving back to Windows...Is this a part of Redmond switch
back campaing?

Yup. I have enabled the Auto-update and therefore I have everything
up-to-date. My Office version is the latest 11.1.1.

I was thinking that are there any non-documented fixes such as
decreasing the amount of Fonts used or removing v.X stuff that still
remains in the folders (I have upgrade licence so I must first install
v.X and after that v.2004) that could improve the performance even a
little.
