Any font selection in any Office app causes app to hang

Using Office 2000/Premium with WinXP. Recently any font selection I make
within any office application causes the app to hang. The only recourse is
to "End Task". I have installed all available updates. When that did not
help, I removed, deleted and reinstalled (with the updates)the entire Office
package. The problem seems to ne random but failure is the general rule.
