Any free newsgroup?

F

FARAZ QURESHI

1. What is a newsgroup?
2. How can I setup one? It requires address of an NNTP everytime I try.
3. Any free newsgroup to test, instead of finding out the ones available
from the ISP, if yes, how is it setup and works?
4. Can it be setup on Outlook 2007 as well, besides Outlook Express?
5. How to setup the same on both, i.e. Outlook 2007 as well as Outlook
Express?

Thanx in advance.

2. How can I setup one? It requires address of an NNTP everytime I

Connect to msnews.microsoft.com for your NNTP server.
3. Any free newsgroup to test, instead of finding out the ones
available from the ISP, if yes, how is it setup and works?

msnews.microsoft.com is free. microsoft.public.test to make test posts.
4. Can it be setup on Outlook 2007 as well, besides Outlook Express?

5. How to setup the same on both, i.e. Outlook 2007 as well as Outlook
Express?

Set them up in one.
Then set them up in the other.

This news server: msnews.microsoft.com - does nOT require a log-in and is
independent of any ISP
3. Any free newsgroup to test, instead of finding out the ones available
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.test

from the ISP, if yes, how is it setup and works?

See above.

Outlook is nOT a newsreader. There are third-party add-ins you can purchase
but IMHO none of them are as good as free news readers you can get

As for your first question: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newsgroup

Outlook 2007 does not provide any native way to read or participate in
newsgroups; Outlook Express or Windows Live Mail are really your best
tools for that probably, unless you want to look at some of the
third-party tools like Agent.

You can also read/participate using Google Groups
(http://groups.google.com).

If you're really anxious to use newsgroups in Outlook then you might
check out NewsHound by Shoreline software
(http://www.shorelinesoftware.com/NewsHound.htm) it's an add-in for
Outlook that supports NNTP. And it's what I use, in fact.

That would likely mean you need a proxy client to connect to a NNTP server.
Ask your IT department.

It's highly likely that your organisation has prohibited access to port 119
which is NNTP. You will need to ask your IT dept to allow you access.
Otherwise you will be stuck with either the web access to these groups or
Googlegroups.

Wow!
Just checked out msnews.microsoft.com upon arriving back home! Thanx Gordon,
Muffman & Ben!!!
Sure's an excellent discovery for me!
By the way, all those downloaded news messages, are they saved on the disk
and need to be deleted time to time or on non-cache and temporary?

Depends. Usually, the headers are downloaded and you don't download the
body of the message until you select it. You should be able to configure
your newsreader to delete older messages from the local message store.

Thanx Brian!
XClent guidance by you all!
Really can't express words suitable enough to express my gratitude.
By the way is this General Outlook Questions' forum, and the likewise
General Excel forum, too on the free msnews?
In other words can I also post these questions via Outlook Express instead
of using IE? If yes, what is the exact address?
Thanx again, pals!

Certainly. Hit the "Newsgroups" button on the toolbar and a searchable list
of all the groups on this server appears....

Wow!
Just found it & this is the first time I'm using Outlook 2007 on reply
instead of using the web! By the way I don't see how to rate your replies
valuable replies of yours via the new message window popped up in the normal
Outlook 2007? and just realized the message returned out to be replied as:

Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.
