Any idea what's going on with my protection?

I have a workbook with a large number of sheets that contain only
calculations. They are supposed to be protected but all of a sudden my
protection doesn't seem to be working. The cells on the sheets are
formatted as "Locked" and from Tools...Protection, "Unprotect Sheet" is
showing rather than "Protect Sheet" indicating that the sheet is already
protected. However none of the cells on the sheet are protected i.e I can
overwrite the contents. I can unprotect the shhet and then protect it again
and this seems to work nut as I mentioned I have a very large number of
sheets and would prefer to avoid the tedium of doing this for each one.

Baffled.
