Any news on the update/fix for Excel/Mac

Just bought an iMac and Office. Seems excel does not really work.
won't recalculate, and does not seem to be able to use sheets made on
a PC.

Has there been any news lately. May seems to be the last entry here I
can find about all this.

Thanks,
j

Hi Johnny -

Although there's no doubt that some problems persist for some users with
some files Excel 2008 does "really work" :) It's likely that your situation
is one that can be corrected locally. Some *specific* conflicts have not yet
been corrected but most of the broader issues have been resolved.

First, if it's a new installation have you applied all available updates?
The Office source disk may be either version 12.0.0 or 12.1.0 - if the
former you need both the 12.1.0 (Service Pack 1) & 12.1.5 updates. If the
latter you need 12.1.5 only. Check the Excel> About Excel menu to see where
you currently stand, then get the required updates available from:

http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.mspx

Repair disk permissions after applying any updates. It would also be a god
idea to set he AutoUpdate app (Help> Check for Updates) to monthly.

If you sill encounter a recalc problem after being fully updated the first
thing to check is Excel> Preferences> Calculation to make sure that the
Automatically option is selected. If that doesn't correct the matter you'll
need to furnish more specific details about the source & content of the
files exhibiting the problem.

As for the 2nd issue, " does not seem to be able to use " is much to vague
for any suggestions to be offered. Again, details about the specific version
of PC Excel that created the file, their content & structure is important.
Can you open the files with File> Open or can they not be opened at all?
What happens when you try to open them? Do you get any error messages? If so
what is the exact wording? How were they transported to your Mac? What
extensions do the names have? Any Pivot Tables, non-alphanumeric characters
in the file/sheet names? Any links to external sources, VBA macros, etc.?
