any process causes windows installer to start

I am running xp home and just installed office 2003. Each
time any new process is started (explorer opens, any
window opens, each time outlook connects to checks or
downloads mail) the installer window shows and then
disapears. Also, I cannot remove office XP and the update
feature on microsoft.com will not go above 40% before
stopping.

Help!

I have the same problem, except I am upgrading from
Office 2000 to Office 2003 Professional. Trying to use
Microsoft's support center is not good as the Product ID
that is on my hardware doesn't seem to be in their
database.
