Any such background template out there....?

I'd be looking for the type of line ruling used in France (two main lines
with three lighter lines in between... French people will know what I mean!)

Let me know!

You would want to be very careful using a template such as that. Another
factor that helps OneNote recognize handwriting is where it sits between
the lines on the page. However, the lines that OneNote goes by are only
the ones that show up when you turn on rule or grid lines via the { View
/ Rule Lines } menu item. Any template you may use will be nothing but a
PICTURE of lines that is displayed in the background. That picture would
cover up OneNote's actual rule lines. If you do get a template such as
you are describing you would have to be very careful to make sure that
it's lines lined up exactly with OneNotes "official" rule lines.
Otherwise the handwriting recognition will be very poor.

Take a look at an article I have written about handwriting in OneNote.
After reading it you will have a better understanding of the importance
of OneNote's rule lines in handwriting recognition.

Rainald has it on his web site at:
ftp://ftp.hs-heilbronn.de/vdb/onenote/on_handwriting.pdf

I'm always too busy writing these newsgroup messages to make a web site
of my own.

P.S. Again, No, there is no way to modify or add to the rule lines that
OneNote gives you in the menu.

Thanks for the info. I'm amazed at how much I'm learning in such a short
time. This program has its shortfalls, but I'm still blown away by the fact
that I can write (scrawl!) something on the screen and then search trough
it... ! But then again. it doesn't take much to excite the children... :)

I wanted to add that I am only positive about this behavior for OneNote
2003. I have not attempted it with OneNote 2007. I have noticed that
OneNote 2007 seems to do a very good job of recognizing text no matter
where you write it as long as it is still basically horizontal. I am
going to experiment with it some today and report back.

I have discovered that OneNote 2007 does a very poor job of recognizing
handwriting if you write too big. If your handwriting covers more than
about one line space up and down then it gets confused as to the order of
the strokes and thus can't match the words. I did find that OneNote can
do just fine when your handwriting is approximately the correct height
even if it is not aligned with the lines perfectly. I realized that I had
been taking notes all semester on top of .PDF files which had been
printed to OneNote 2007 and thus were pictures which covered up the rule
lines.

Therefore, a template that was essentially nothing more than a picture of
different rule lines would seem to work IF the final height of your
handwriting was approximately the same as OneNote's rule lines regardless
of whether it was shifted up or down.

Carmen, if you do find or create such a template as you originally
described, all you would have to do is resize the picture in the
background to match the line height of OneNote 2007's rule lines in order
to get good recognition. Since you can also choose various line spacings
in OneNote you should be able to find something that works for you.

Keep in mind that a template such as this is NOT going to automatically
grow as you need more space. The OneNote page will grow when you click
the "Add Space" button at the bottom right. However, the picture of your
French rule lines will not grow. You would need to add yet another
picture below the first one or simply create a new OneNote page for every
page you wanted to write on. A workaround for this may be to keep a .PDF
of your French rule lines handy and repeatedly print it to the "Send to
OneNote" printer as you need more room. Personally, this would get old
really fast. This would also make your OneNote notebook really huge
because of all the copies of the same picture on all your pages. Of
course you could go back and delete the pictures from behind your text
but that would get tiresome also. You will probably be better off just
getting used to the boring American rule lines provided by Microsoft.

So I go to the Clairefontaine website (they are one of France's major
stationery companies). I find out that the type of rule they use on their
paper is called "Seyès". I do a search of the word and I find a website
http://perso.orange.fr/document/cahier.htm with a .gif of it. I import the
..gif into OneNote, making sure to respect the line ruling which already
exists, and TA DA.... it works! Now I'll see if I can just create my own
stationery.

Thanks for letting my know about the importance of line ruling and stuff...

That sure seems like a lot of work just to get a certain type of rule
line, but congratulations for getting it to work.

Do you want to just use the .GIF you downloaded and set the page you
pasted it onto as stationary? Or do you want to create your own picture
with letterhead or something so you can paste it into OneNote?

ooh good question... I have no idea. I'll try it and get back to you.
