Any Sympatico.ca Users Have email advice?

I have been a sympatico user for years.

One of my many frustrations with my move to Mac is sympatico's refusal
to support Entourage.

Today my email stopped sending -- I receive and yes I'm connected to
the internet.

My mail settings are POP6 (incoming) and SMTP1 (outgoing) servers.

When I send the error I get is 3253 "Connection to server filed or was
dropped"

When I call sympatico they say I should change to POPHM and SMTPHM --
on those settings I can't receive anything "an operation on the server
timed out" 3259 or send "5.7.0 Must Issue a STARTTLS command first"
17099.

When I use the above new server settings in Mac Mail the thing seems
to work.

Anyone else have problems like these?

Does it make sense that the same settings wouldn't work in Entourage
but will work in Mac Mail?

If it works in Mac Mail; try to import from Mac Mail. Go to file and choose
import, then choose from program and see if that will work for you. When you
import an account make sure you delete the account that you have in there
already. You don't want two accounts that are the same that will give you
errors as well.
If this doesn't work try changing your SMTP port to 587 in the advanced
sending options (button under SMTP server).
Hope this works.

Update ...

Figure I'll enter here even if so I have a record for myself.

I went into the "advanced settings" and when using POPHM and SMTPHM I
need to check that it should use "secure SSL" and on the sending "the
server requires authentication"

Send and receive now work.

I still curse sympatico and ain't too pleased with entourage -- might
be easier to swittch to Mac Mail.

Diane,

Yes I did. Had those settings all along. I tried something else last
night with a PC....I used outlook express (properly set up per
sympatico instructions) and smtp did not work on it either. This test
included removing the router and going direct to the DSL modem and it
also included disabling Norton Internet Security. I am now convinced
that there is an environmental problem...not sure where. My high speed
ISP is Rogers. I use sympatico for dial up and for email. It's
either Rogers blocking port 25 or Sympatico's SMTP server is messed
up. I talked to Sympatico and they will not accept any of the
accountability to help resolve.

All,

As an additional note, I'd be curious to know if anyone is having this
problem who is using Sympatico as their high speed ISP. If that is
the case, then, it pretty much narrows the issue to Sympatico's smtp
server. I am willing to speak to them again if there is a ground
swell of like problems.

Thx

Try the port settings for traveling.

I asked on the Entourage talk list for you and will report back if I get any
feedback.

Lynn Q

Hi, All,

I just found this particular post and thought I'd add my own personal
experiences in case this still applies to other users.

I, too, am a Sympatico user but due to their situation with no longer
supporting rural customers who are unable to have high speed access I use a
different (satellite) ISP. I keep my Sympatico account (DUN) for
emergencies and for the simple fact that I need their security software for
family members. If I used Sympatico alone I would have a fabulous 26.6
connection. Anyway, I digress.

Here's what I know from long experience with Sympatico and with also being a
fairly recently converted Mac user currently running with Leopard 10.5.1 on
an Intel Mac. Depending on the situation and the OS I use either the Second
or Third options and so far have no problems with Entourage 2004 on my Mac.

First. Is your account the original Sympatico account. In other words is
it a 10 MB storage account? If so, then your original pop6 and smtp1
settings should still be the ones to use. For these I do not believe you
use SSL servers.

Second. Did you upgrade from the 10 MB storage to the Sympatico 2 GB
storage account? If so, then you need to use the pophm and smtphm SSL
servers. Incoming: POPHM.sympatico.ca; Outgoing: SMTPHM.sympatico.ca.
Port 995 has to be enabled and I believe you also have to authenticate.
I'll double-check the settings if this still needs to be confirmed. I
actually use the Third option below in Entourage.

Third. Do you have the MSN Premium option on your 2 GB account? If you do
then you can use the MSN/Hotmail option when creating your Sympatico account
in Entourage.

One other thing. A few years ago I was using Norton Internet Security and
Norton System Works 2005 on Windows XP. It (NIS, antivirus) would not work
properly with the smtphm and pophm servers because they were SSL. As I
recall the problem that AV had was along the lines of having to disable the
pop scanning for incoming messages. That's when I switched (partially) to
the MSN Premium for Sympatico option and I also incorporated the then newly
available Sympatico security software for my XP system (from RadialPoint
Software, but now another company supplies this to Sympatico). I will say
that Sympatico's security software suite (antivirus, antispyware, firewall,
etc.) all work very well on my XP systems. They're currently at version 6
and I actually have no complaints with these.

If I can give any other information then please post a message back to this
group. I'm only too glad to offer a contribution to assist someone else.

All the best!

Lynn
