any way to enter time on a task that wasn't assigned to you?

Hi,
Is there any way for a team member to enter time on tasks that they are not
assigned to?

Say, a team member works on a project but the project manager doesn’t add
them to the Project Team for that specific project.

I’ve tried using the “Assign Work to a Team†method proposed by Microsoft
which make any task up for grabs. This process is too tedious for some people
to follow as it requires the user assign the task to themselves before they
can report time on it. Also, it doesn’t allow multiple people to self-assign
the same task. So if two resources work on the same task, only one will be
allowed to enter time.

I understand this method defeats the purpose of “Project Managementâ€, but
for the purposes of timekeeping my company would like to have a feature like
this.

The only other alternative I can see is assigning all tasks for all projects
to all resources.

Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thank you !

In Project Server 2007, resources assigned to at least one task can
self-assign themselves to other tasks in the project. To do this, they
click the New button on the My Tasks page and select the Task item on the
menu. On the New Task page, they need to select the name of the project in
which they want to self-assign, select a Phase or Deliverable section in the
Outline Level pick list, and then select the "Existing task" item. From
there they can pick the task from a list of tasks in that section of the
project. Hope this helps.
