I can find it in .gif or .bmp format, but don't know how to convert to .ico
format.

Get IrfanView (www.irfanview.com), resize your image to icon size (32x32),
then save as .ico file.

Your answer assumes I'm doing something improper. I purchased a legal retail
full-box version of Office 2003 (which cost me a lot of money). This version
of Office did not place any toolbar or Office icon on my desktop. I have
copied the Office shortcut to my desktop and would like to change the icon
assigned by Windows to the "Office" icon. So the reason for my question is
completely legitimate. I'm sure I'm not breaking any rules. If you have any
answers instead of directing me to rules, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

Nothing is preventing you from changing the icons you assign to Office
application shortcuts that you create on the desktop. Create the
shortcut, in Properties of the shortcut pick Change Icon, then Browse to
the file containing the icon you want to assign.

I wasn't assuming anything. I was merely passing along Microsoft's viewpoint
on the use of their logos.

The problem is that the icon for the MS Office group of programs is not one
of the choices. Hence the question regarding how to obtain it.

AH! The real question! The answer is Browse to

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\OFFICE11\MSOICONS.EXE

And assign the Icon
