Any way to have the filename field in the footer auto update?

When I open a template with the filename set to display in the footer,
the filename becomes "Document(x)" and when I give the file its real
name, I need to right-click and choose "update field."

Is there a way to have it autoupdate on file name change?

Can't answer without knowing the version of Word.

"No". Sorry, there is a bug in Word 2008's fields behaviour.

The FileName field should be a "Warm" field that updates when you open the
document.

Instead, it's a "Cold" field that updates only when you specifically update
it.

You "could" set your Word>Preferences>Print "Update Fields" setting to ON.
That should update the field whenever you print. I run that way and put up
with the nagging from the Table of Contents, but you may find that such a
setting annoys you.

Try it and see.

Hope this helps

Sorry, Word 2008
