Any workaround for rules limitation??

I have read through this message boards about the 32K limit on rules, on
Outlook connecting to Exchange Server. It seems that this is a hard limit
with no way to change it.

Firstly I find it really crummy that MS would set such a limitation on such
a much-used feature. I would assume that anyone who has used Outlook for any
amount of time would have a good set of rules for sorting their messages.

But beyond that, is there any way to deal with this other than to tell my
users that they can't have too many rules? Is there a way to compact the
exisiting rules, or re-setup the rules so that they don't take up too much
space? Is there a way to do some other kind of server-side or client-side
rule set?

Do you, the MVP's use Outlook and have rules set up? How do you deal with
the problem?

No, you cannot extend this limit. It's not so much that MS has hardcoded
this limit but it's more like a technical limit that never got changed for
other technical reasons and backward compatibility. Just like Outlook
97-2002 pst-files can't be bigger than 2GB which made perfect sense at the
time of small drives and FAT16 formats. AFAIK the Exchange folks are still
looking into this.

Personally I don't have that much rules. I color code some messages, move
messages from several people to a single folder, move newsletters to a
single folder and use the Outlook Junk E-mail Filter to catch my SPAM.
Additonally I use Search Folders and the LookOut add-in to take care of the
rest of my needs.

A common mistake you see when people are using rules is that they use it to
try to catch SPAM and to move all the mail from their contacts into a
separate folder named after that contact. Using the Junk E-mail Filter and
sort By Contact in the Inbox folder will take care of that
