Anything typed shows as black line

Anything and everything typed in obscures the entire line - like it is
highlighted, but you can't see what is underneath. I know this has a very
simple solution but just can't remember what it is! I'm asking on behalf of
someone else, so I think it is Word 2000 but can't be absolutely sure.
Somtimes if you click right at the bottom of the document it uncovers the
text, but as soon as you type anything else, everything is obscured again.
