Version: 2004 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel I click file and I see the recent files at bottom. It shows about 10. I would love it to show 50. It was save so much time. Any hope on that?

No, the max number of recently used files in Office 2004 apps is 9.

If you want more use File> Project Gallery - Recent. You can set the number
of files on the Customize page of the Project Gallery as high as 999.

Bob,
I know the project file trick, but that takes more steps than just retrieving the file from a folder, right?
What the deal with just showing 9 from the file menu?
thanks!

Hi Kevs:

There are lots of places in computing where you just "pick a number".
There's always a cost to getting things too big: you take more memory and
CPU cycles and end up with a slow product.

They picked "9" 20 years ago over on the PC side. They didn't change it
until last year. Basically, there's no point: the operating system (both
Windows 7 and OS 10.6) provide a better way to manage accessing recent files
these days. I suggest you use those.

Look up "Stacks" in the OS X help...

Cheers

Don't know how you figure that. Shift+Command+P pops you right into the PG
which you can have set to open to the Recent page. The files are listed
regardless of folder location & the list can be sorted in ascending or
descending order based on name or date with the click of a button. You also
have the dropdown list that allows you to restrict the list to any one type
of Office file. IMHO, it may not be perfect but it's faster & more efficient
than Finder in many respects.

As for the limit of 9 files in the menu I'm sure the length of the list was
taken into consideration. Having 50 may 'sound' desirable but even if you
could do it I doubt you'd find it to be as useful as you envision it :)

John, thanks!
Stacks, I use a bit from the dock, but its still the finder, nowhere near as fast as file recent right?

Bob,
great, only thing is that window is so dang tiny and I don't see drag handles.
Also I set it to Excel only this month and tried also All, but only see 8-9.
Why is that? I thought I would see 30-40
That said I suppose if I got in the habit of doing this it would be better in the long run than using file recent? you agree?

True, that window is not sizable.

The number of files displayed depends on the value in the Settings, but that
number includes *all* Office documents as well as other file types (CSV,
RTF, etc.) which have been opened by Office apps. If you want more of any
one type of file to appear, increase the setting.

Keep in mind that there is only so much any one program/feature is going to
give you. The developers shoot for 'mainstream' requirements & perhaps offer
some degree of latitude for customizing. Any users whose needs/wants fall
outside of that range have to search elsewhere to meet their requirements.

Perhaps you should look into obtaining a file management program that will
do what you want. If you have Adobe software you might already have Adobe
Bridge, for example. It's primarily intended for managing media libraries
but it can be used for managing any type of files. There are a number of
other file management tools out there as well.

Bob, where do you increase the setting.
Also, just noticed, it take over 10 seconds to bring that box up. It comes up as white then takes 10 seconds for stuff to populate it.
That makes everything moot in a way, as I could find the file in the finder.
I have Bridge, use it al the time as a photographer.
Bob we are talking about saving a few seconds. Why would I go into bridge to find a recent Excel file?

John, actually for finder I also use Drag Thing which is awesome.
NOthing would be though if the drop down went further down.
